On November 7th, the ProWorks consulting team made a successful demonstration of the Distributed National FOQA Archives (DNFA) project. Present at the demonstration were members of NASA and the FAA Voluntary Safety Information Sharing Aviation Rule Making Committee. DNFA is an airlines safety system managed by NASA for the Federal Aviation Administration.

FOQA is an acronym for Flight Operations Quality Assurance. FOQA programs involve the collection and analysis of flight data to improve flight safety. FOQA programs have been used effectively by airlines around the globe to prevent aircraft accidents. In the United Sates, data confidentiality issues have been an obstacle to adoption.

The DNFA system addresses the issue of confidentiality by de-identifying FOQA data from the distributed databases of participating airlines and aggregating it into database that is then accessible for analysis. It was the crucial de-identification and analysis functionality of DNFA that ProWorks demonstrated at Battelle’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Congratulations to the ProWorks consulting team, including Chris Mosbrucker, Tim Romanowski and Gary Prothero that had worked very hard leading up to the demo to ensure that the presentation would be a success. Working in collaboration with the prime contractor Battelle, ProWorks was responsible for the system architecture and software development for DNFA. On January 21st, 2006, DNFA is scheduled to go live and service seven participating airlines to make public air travel safer.
